There is always a lot going on when it comes to my hair. I have super thick wavy hair that forms cute little tangly rats nests very easily and is prone to dryness. On top of that, I diligently highlight my hair and am always concerned about using products that won’t fade the color.

But then, I also want my hair to be shiny, soft, and full of volume. So in order to tackle all of these issues, I essentially need a haircare regime consisting of like 11 different products right??

WRONG.

I was presented with the opportunity to try out Function of Beauty, a new line of customizable shampoo and conditioner that are designed to target your specific hair needs. The company was founded by a team of MIT graduates and a cosmetic chemist from Fairleigh Dickinson, so safe to say they know their stuff.

Getting your custom order is a super easy and quick process. Simply go to the website’s hair lab and click on the options that best describe your hair. Then, select five choices from a list of hair goals, including deep condition, lengthen, volumize, color protect, and hydrate. You can then select the scent and color of your shampoo and conditioner set. I picked grapefruit hibiscus but was very tempted by cucumber mint and white tea jasmine.

And okay, damn. I was very pleased with the results. I noticed that the shampoo really doesn’t lather like most other shampoos do, but apparently this is intentional, as more moisturizing shampoos tend to have less lather. I was also pleasantly surprised by the ingredient list for my set, it had a ton of natural oils like almond extract and jojoba oil to replenish my ends, and rice protein and tea tree oil to provide my hair with volume.

After brushing and blow drying, my hair was instantly looking shiner and had a notable bounce to it. It felt crazy soft and my ends felt hydrated and smooth. It also smelt fantastic- I love that my set got its grapefruit hibiscus scent from actual grapefruit and hibiscus extract, nothing artificial! Regardless of your hair profile, every bottle is guaranteed free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, GMOs, and triclosan. Love it.
